6G: Mobile Networks for the AI Era
With the advent of AI, mobile networks must evolve from traditional information systems into integral components of distributed intelligence. This talk explores how Generative, Agentic, and Physical AI are reshaping network traffic—leading to more uplink-heavy, bursty, and latency-critical demands across devices such as smartphones, AR glasses, and robotics. We will discuss the key radio access network (RAN) technologies that will define AI-native 6G, including Extreme MIMO, AI for/on/and RAN, Integrated Sensing and Communications, and Non-terrestrial Networks. Together, these innovations will significantly enhance coverage, capacity, and reliability, enabling differentiated services and new monetization opportunities. The talk will also highlight key challenges, including scalability, energy efficiency, and the need to deliver deterministic performance for next-generation intelligent services.

Harish Viswanathan
Biography:
Harish Viswanathan is Head of the Radio Systems Research Lab at Nokia Bell Labs. He received the B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. Since joining Bell Labs in 1997, he has conducted extensive research spanning the physical layer to network architecture and protocols. His work includes multiple antenna technologies for cellular systems, multi-hop relays, network optimization, and IoT communications. He has authored over 150 publications. From 2007 to 2015, he was part of the Corporate CTO organization, where as a CTO Partner he advised on technology strategy through in-depth analysis of emerging technologies and market trends. He is an IEEE Fellow and a Bell Labs Fellow.
