Applications of Remote Sensing in the field of Astronomy
On 9 June 2026, the IEEE GRSS Oman Chapter, in collaboration with the Remote Sensing and GIS Research Center, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), organized a technical session entitled "Applications of Remote Sensing in the Field of Astronomy" for the staff of the Department of Astronomical Affairs, Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs. The event was held at the Remote Sensing and GIS Research Center, SQU, and was attended by 13 participants.
The session focused on the application of remote sensing and geospatial technologies in supporting astronomical observations and research. Participants were introduced to the use of satellite remote sensing for atmospheric monitoring, cloud cover assessment, dust and aerosol analysis, environmental monitoring, and observatory site evaluation. The presentation also highlighted the integration of Geographic Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) with Earth observation data to improve geospatial analysis, automate data interpretation, and support decision-making in astronomy-related applications.
Practical examples and case studies relevant to Oman were presented to demonstrate how remote sensing can contribute to lunar visibility studies, environmental assessment for astronomical observations, and broader space-related scientific initiatives. The session concluded with an interactive discussion on future collaboration opportunities and the potential role of advanced geospatial technologies in enhancing astronomical research and operational activities. The event successfully strengthened participants' awareness of emerging remote sensing technologies and their applications in the field of related astronomical applications.
