Topic:

KIOS Tasks at the PWD Traffic Control Room

This presentation outlines the development and implementation of the Traffic Control Room (TCR) in Cyprus, established through a collaboration between the KIOS CoE and the Public Works Department (PWD) within the VERKKO and TISGRADE projects. The initiative aims to improve the collection, validation, and dissemination of Intelligent Transportation System data by integrating multiple roadside sensors, CCTV cameras, variable message signs (VMS), and the SWARCO OMNIA traffic management platform. The work focuses on digitizing traffic circulation plans, validating speed limit and roadwork data, enhancing data quality through automated quality assurance processes, and ensuring compliance with European data standards and the National Access Point (CYNAP). The presentation also discusses the operational activities of the TCR, including real-time traffic monitoring, incident management, stakeholder coordination, and the challenges associated with sensor reliability, software limitations, and operational procedures. Finally, it highlights how the established infrastructure and high-quality traffic data will support future traffic analytics, intelligent mobility services, infrastructure planning, and evidence-based decision-making to improve road safety and traffic management across Cyprus.
