One Digital Health and FAIR Principles

Session 3 of the OneAquaHealth Innovation Series Leading to the IEEE OneAquaHealth Global Hackathon

TOPIC: One Digital Health and FAIR Principles

As the third educational session leading up to the IEEE OneAquaHealth Global Hackathon, this webinar introduces participants to the digital foundations that enable effective collaboration across environmental health, public health, and technology. Building on previous sessions, participants will explore how the One Digital Health (ODH) framework and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) Principles provide the foundation for developing connected, data-driven, and sustainable solutions for complex global challenges.

The session will examine how the One Digital Health Steering Wheel integrates digital technologies, health, environmental science, and societal needs into a unified framework for innovation. Attendees will learn why interoperable data, standardized information sharing, and responsible digital ecosystems are essential for advancing research, enabling AI-driven insights, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and fostering collaboration across disciplines.

Designed for researchers, students, developers, healthcare professionals, environmental scientists, policymakers, and hackathon participants, this session will provide a practical understanding of how FAIR principles can improve data quality, accessibility, and reuse while accelerating innovation within the OneAquaHealth ecosystem.

Whether your hackathon project focuses on freshwater ecosystems, digital health, artificial intelligence, IoT, citizen science, biodiversity, environmental monitoring, or community resilience, this session will help you design solutions that are interoperable, scalable, and aligned with global best practices for responsible data sharing and digital innovation. By understanding the principles of One Digital Health and FAIR data, participants will be better equipped to build impactful, collaborative solutions that contribute to healthier ecosystems, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future.

Oscar Tamburis of Researcher in Health Informatics, EFMI & IMIA Leadership

The One Digital Health & FAIR Principles webinar on July 15, 2026 will introduce participants to the core digital foundations behind the OneAquaHealth project. Building on the project’s mission to strengthen urban freshwater ecosystem health and human wellbeing, the session will explore how the deployment of the One Digital Health (ODH) framework – the so-called Steering Wheel – is meant to highlight the “digital balance” lying under the OneAquaHealth project. This becomes possible via the definition of FAIR‑aligned digital tools, within the greater scenario of the ODH Intervention, with the objective of enabling transparent, connected, and actionable insights for researchers, policymakers, and communities working toward resilient aquatic ecosystems.

Biography:

Oscar Tamburis, Ph.D. is a researcher in Health Informatics at the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and a lecturer at the University of Naples Federico II. He serves as Chair of the One Digital Health Working Group within the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) and Co-Chair of the One Digital Health Working Group within the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). His research focuses on digital health, health informatics, telemedicine, interoperability, and the One Digital Health framework, advancing innovative approaches that connect human, animal, and environmental health through digital technologies and FAIR data principle
