It highlights women’s leadership in science and engineering and the role of atmospheric monitoring technologies in sustainable semiconductor development.

ENES Morelia UNAM, the Bachelor’s Program in Sustainable Materials Science CIMATSUS, and the International Laboratory of Environmental Electronic Devices (LAIDEA) UNAM are pleased to host this session, with the support of IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE). LAIDEA hosts the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Professional Chapter of the IEEE Centro Occidente Section and the EDS Michoacán Regional Hub for Sustainable Semiconductor Device Development.
The EDS Michoacán Regional Hub fosters inter-institutional collaboration to advance sustainable technologies and semiconductor device design, in line with Mexico’s national strategy to strengthen this strategic industry.
This session recognizes the leadership of women in science and engineering as a driver of technological and environmental innovation. It also strengthens academic, research and technology development ties between ENES Morelia, the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change (ICAyCC) UNAM, and the University of Bremen, Germany.

Women have made important contributions to science and engineering despite barriers such as gender stereotypes, limited opportunities and underrepresentation. This talk recognizes their achievements, challenges and growing contributions to STEM. It also promotes diversity and equal opportunities for innovation in both academia and industry, encouraging new perspectives and inspiring future generations to pursue STEM careers.
11:00 Talk (in Spanish): “Cuándo usar monitores de bajo costo o muestreadores pasivos. Experiencias de un laboratorio compartido” (When to use low-cost monitors or passive samplers: experiences from a shared laboratory)
Dr. Gema Luz Andraca Ayala, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change, UNAM
Drawing on projects from the Shared Chromatography Laboratory at ICAyCC UNAM, this talk explains how the lab chooses between low-cost monitors and passive sampling devices to monitor criteria and non-criteria air pollutants. It compares both approaches in terms of:
- temporal and spatial resolution
- cost, operation and maintenance
- sensitivity and selectivity
- calibration and validation needs
Choosing the right method helps produce reliable data on the presence and distribution of atmospheric pollutants.
