Join Rob Wolf, PE PMP, Manager on how grids can utilize a real-time digital simulation (RTDS) lab to create a digital twin and test manufacturer claims and ensure equipment is correctly configured prior to deployment. 

Grid Intelligence is transforming the way modern power systems operate by combining real-time data, advanced analytics, and AI-driven insights to create smarter, more resilient, and more efficient electrical grids. By enabling utilities to better monitor, predict, and optimize grid performance, Grid Intelligence supports faster decision-making, improved reliability, and the seamless integration of advanced technologies, such as DER’s, wildfire mitigation or virtual protection systems.

However, as more intelligence is moving to the Grid Edge and compliance obligations continue to increase, how can Utilities adapt and validate that a particular solution will address the desired use cases? How can Utilities learn from mistakes of the past, such as promises related to AMI 1.0 or early demand response programs? How can Utilities ensure that their capital funds are going to solve their most challenging issues?

This is where testing and validation comes in. Utilizing a real-time digital simulation (RTDS) lab to create a digital twin, utilities can now test manufacturer claims and ensure equipment is correctly configured prior to deployment. We will show how utilities can:

1) Validate analytics and Grid Edge applications,

2) Use real utility historical data to generate new grid insights,

3) Develop and validate new use cases, and

4) Ensure a utility’s Grid Edge journey generates real business value.

Biography:

 

Rob Wolf, PE PMP, Manager – Advanced Metering Infrastructure, focuses on AMI and Grid Edge consulting to electric, water and gas utilities. At Danovo Energy Solutions, he works with utilities to understand use cases, ensure technology achieves corporate strategy, navigate funding opportunities and act as an independent, trusted advisor to Utilities trying to develop a foundation to their electric / water / gas modernization strategy.

Prior to joining Danovo, Rob was the Grid Automation Solution Architect at Aclara / Hubbell. During Rob’s tenure at Hubbell, he focused on working as a Utility Partner to bring advanced Grid Modernization applications to their systems. As part of the Enhanced Utilities Services group, his role was to work with Utilities to strategize grid modernization applications and deployments, assist in building business cases, help Utilities navigate the Regulatory / Funding opportunities and assist Utilities seeking additional outside services to supplement their own workforce. Though the focus has been primarily Electric Utilities through advanced Use Cases such as Distribution Automation and Volt-VAR Optimization, he worked to bring “The Smart Grid” concept to Water and Gas Utilities as well.

Prior to joining Aclara in early 2022, Rob spent 11 years in both Electric Transmission and Distribution roles for LG&E and KU Energy. He started in Transmission Protection and Controls implementing large substation projects, including a new greenfield 138/345kV Transmission substation and interfaces to a new greenfield Combined-Cycle Natural Gas generation facility, and eventually Managed the NERC Compliance standards (PRC, EOP, TOP and VAR) for the Transmission Control Center. While in an Electric Distribution Operations role, Rob spent over 2 years implementing a Distribution Automation rollout along with various other duties.

Prior to his Utility experience, Rob spent roughly 8 years as an Engineering Consultant mostly in the Petrochemical Industry running projects of various size and impact.
