IEEE PELS Day 2026 - Workshop: Challenges and Opportunities in Power Electronics in Colombia.
⚡ Welcome to the IEEE PELS Day 2026 Celebration! ⚡
Bridging the gap between theory and industry through
hands-on power electronics manufacturing.
As part of the global IEEE PELS Day 2026 celebration, the organizational units from Universidad de los Andes and Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas joined forces with the institutional endorsement and support of the IEEE PELS Colombia Professional Chapter. This collaboration enabled a comprehensive, high-impact national event. While the keynote lectures were coordinated by the PELS Uniandes Chapter, the Universidad Distrital Student Branch took the lead on the interactive and hands-on experiences, successfully bridging academic theory with electronics manufacturing and the industry.
Interactive Exhibition: Siemens & Ectricol Bus ShowRoom
To bring students closer to state-of-the-art commercial technologies, a mobile industrial automation laboratory was brought on-site.
-
Objective: To expose attendees to real-scale industrial equipment, facilitating networking and direct interaction with industry engineers.
-
Execution: The Bus ShowRoom was strategically located in front of the Mario Laserna Building. Guided tours allowed participants to interact with control panels, variable frequency drives, solid-state soft starters, and energy management systems.
-
Impact: This activity broke the traditional conference mold, providing a "hands-on" immersive experience that highlighted the direct applications of power electronics in the Colombian productive sector.
Workshop: Power PCB Design and Assembly
This activity was structured as a technical space where attendees moved from theoretical simulation to physical hardware implementation.
-
Objective: To foster electronics manufacturing and soldering skills in engineering students, focusing on critical components for power conversion systems.
-
Execution: Held during the afternoon session (Laboratory ML009). Students worked on a pre-designed printed circuit board (PCB), completing the full assembly and soldering process.
-
Competitive Component: To encourage participation and technical excellence, the session concluded with a "PCB Assembly Contest," evaluating soldering quality, time, and circuit functionality.
Participation and Articulation with IEEE PELS Colombia
The success of these initiatives would not have been possible without the active participation of the IEEE PELS Colombia Professional Chapter. Their role was crucial in:
-
Acting as a connecting bridge between student branches and industry professionals.
-
Supporting the massive nationwide promotion of the event, ensuring diverse attendance from different institutions.
-
Promoting the global guidelines of the Power Electronics Society, tailored to the needs and challenges of engineering in the country.
