When the Worlds of AC and DC Collide: Stray DC Sources and Effects on our AC Grid

#Power #protection #grid
Share

This presentation educates audience members on the various sources of DC
interference that affect the operation of our AC grid. These sources range
from HVDC transmission lines and transit systems to solar flares and cathodic
protection systems. The presentation examines what results when this DC
interference finds its way onto AC lines, and finally, what options are
available to prevent it from wreaking havoc on grid equipment and operations.

Biography:

Mason Spang is with a Dairyland Electrical Industries, a leader in
electrical isolation technologies. Before working with electrical
isolation solutions, he's worked in asset management where he built
solutions to predict breakdowns in circuit breakers, transformers and
back-up batteries. He holds a degree in Engineering Physics from the
University of Wisconsin Platteville where he brings a lens of first
principles to the problems of the day. At present, Mason is active in
several IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) committees focused on
electrical interference challenges.
