During the first 5-10 minutes, Jared Schoepf of ASU will discuss discuss the EPICS program and volunteer opportunities for our membership; the remainder of the time, Dr. Inder Makin and Priyanka Makin will discuss biomedical applications for Ultrasound-based Wireless Powering.

This talk will present the use of ultrasound energy for wireless transfer of power through solid, liquid, gels, and related non-gaseous materials, as an alternative to the commonly used electro-magnetic (mainly inductive or capacitive) energy, remote powering schemes. Ultrasound Wireless Power Transfer (UWPT) is uniquely applicable for powering Active Implantable Medical Devices (AIMD) placed deep in the biological tissue, subcutaneous implants requiring several watts of power transfer, or where the source beam can be steered electronically using a coarse array, to correct for Source-Target misalignment. UWPT can be implemented also in the non-implantable space, such as for charging multiple digital devices simultaneously, as well as industrial applications where energy has to propagate through metal layers. The basic physical concepts determining directive beam propagation, attenuation and temperature increase will be defined. Experimental results will be presented, based on specific use-case specifications for medical (implantable) applications, as well as powering digital devices. Favorable implications of deploying UWPT for a subset of all wireless applications in lieu of the currently used power-transfer methods will be discussed.

Biography:

Inder Raj Makin, MD, PhD, is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of UltraPower, Inc., an ultrasound-based wireless powering solutions company (UWP). Dr. Makin is a scientist-innovator in the area of medical instrumentation and ultrasound, having published >35 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and ~70 issued patents. He was Principal Scientist at J&J Ethicon Endo-Surgery, and co-founder of Ulthera, Xthetix, and Guided Therapy Systems. Dr. Makin is currently a tenured Professor at A.T. Still University, AZ, working in diverse areas of device development, medical ultrasound research as well as teaching and training medical physicians.

Biography:

Priyanka Makin is a computer engineer, creative technologist, and educator specializing in embedded systems and programming. Her work focuses on rapid hardware prototyping, designing bespoke devices, and building inclusive educational spaces. She is a Research Engineer at UltraPower, Inc., and a faculty member at ASU’s GAME School, where she teaches microcontroller circuitry and creative coding to designers. She previously worked as a product engineer at SparkFun Electronics. She is an Ada Lovelace Fellow, a presenter at Hackaday Supercon, and a Toolmaker-in-Residence at Signal Culture. 

Priyanka is an alum from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Master’s Program and University of Colorado Boulder ECEE program.
