Reactive Robot Behaviors: From Verifiable Orchestration to Data-Driven Policies
Prof. Lorenzo Natale is a Tenured Senior Researcher and Principal Investigator at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Genoa, Italy. He serves as the Coordinator of the Center for Robotics & Intelligent Systems (CRIS), where his research focuses on autonomous robotics, robot perception, cognitive systems, machine learning, and intelligent decision-making. He has led several national and international research projects and has made significant contributions to the development of advanced humanoid and autonomous robotic systems. His work bridges the gap between verifiable robotic control architectures and modern data-driven approaches, making him a leading expert in the field of intelligent robotics.
Biography:
Prof. Lorenzo Natale is a Tenured Senior Researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Genoa, Italy, and Coordinator of the Center for Robotics & Intelligent Systems (CRIS). He received his Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering and Ph.D. in Robotics from the University of Genoa. His research focuses on humanoid robotics, robot vision, tactile sensing, software architectures for robotics, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence. He has been a key contributor to the development of the iCub humanoid robot platform and the YARP middle ware. Prof. Natale has served as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator for several European Union-funded research projects and has held leadership roles in the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, including Editor of IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters and Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Robotics. He is an IEEE Fellow and an ELLIS Fellow, and since 2025 has been serving as an IEEE-RAS Distinguished Lecturer in Software Engineering for Robotics and Automation.
