Beyond the Heartbeat: A Fireside Chat on Cardiovascular Health, Prevention, Myths, Risks & Medical Technology
This fireside conversation with Dr. Cummings will explore common myths and misconceptions about cardiovascular health, along with the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high cholesterol, family history, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, and obesity.
The discussion will also cover prevention strategies, treatment options, and advances in cardiovascular care, while exploring the important role of engineering and medical technology in modern cardiology, from diagnostics and medical devices to interventional procedures and emerging innovations.

The IEEE Washington DC Section is one of IEEE’s historic local Sections, serving the engineering and technology community across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Its roots date back to 1902, when a group of engineers formed the Washington Society of Engineers. In 1903, the organization was formally admitted as a branch of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE), one of the predecessor organizations of today’s IEEE. The Section has a remarkable connection to the history of technology: Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, was among its founding members and directors. Biography:
Dr. Charles C. Cummings is a cardiologist practicing in the Baltimore area with decades of experience in cardiovascular medicine. He serves as Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.
Dr. Cummings completed postgraduate training in internal medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, followed by cardiovascular disease training at Presbyterian University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Colin Russell

Biography:
Colin Russell is a Computer Engineer from Youngstown, Ohio now based in Cleveland. He is the chair of the Young Professionals Affinity Group within the IEEE Cleveland Section. Additionally, he is the Vice Chair of Events for IEEE Regions 1 and 2 Young Professionals. Colin is a Senior Software Engineer at Nationwide where he specializes in creating APIs and microservices for the financial services industry. Colin is a graduate of Ohio University, where he was an ambassador for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology's Electrical Engineering program and chair of the university's student section of IEEE. While chair of the Ohio University IEEE branch, Colin organized presentations featuring guest speakers from prestigious organizations including NASA, Boeing, the Department of Energy, and Ohio University's own professors. In addition to leading the Ohio University IEEE section, Colin worked with the student ExCom to revitalize the university's Eta Kappa Nu section. To further his education, Colin is currently pursing a Master's of Science in Computer Science from Tufts University.

Randima Bellana

Biography:
Randima Bellana is the Chair of IEEE Washington DC Young Professionals and a graduate student in Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, with interests in artificial intelligence, machine learning, healthcare and financial technology, and the intersection of engineering and medicine.
Prior to graduate study, Randima worked as a Software Engineer at Axiata Digital Labs, the software development arm of Axiata Group Berhad (Malaysia), contributing to software and technology solutions across international projects. She holds a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Her research experience spans both engineering and healthcare, including work with the Knight Lab at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and current research with Johns Hopkins Medicine under gastroenterologist Dr. Sudhir K. Dutta.
An active IEEE volunteer since 2018, Randima began her IEEE leadership journey as Secretary of the IEEE University of Moratuwa Student Branch in Sri Lanka. She currently serves as Chair of IEEE Washington DC Young Professionals, where she reactivated the affinity group after more than four years of inactivity and has led and supported technical, professional development, networking, and conference initiatives. Her IEEE involvement includes IEEE NANO 2025, IEEE Cloud Summit 2026 and 2027, IEEE Women in Engineering Forum USA East 2025, and IEEE Young Professionals Summit 2026. She is also an IEEE Computer Society Career Catalyst Scholar (2026).
Randima has held several conference and program leadership roles, including Co-Chair of the Congress Secretariat Committee for the 2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society Global Student Congress and Track Leader for the 2021 IEEE Power Electronics Society Students and Young Professionals Symposium.
