James Webb Space Telescope: A New View of the Universe


The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is transforming our understanding of the universe through unprecedented observations in infrared astronomy. From some of the earliest galaxies formed after the Big Bang to the birth of stars and planetary systems, Webb is allowing astronomers to explore objects and phenomena that were previously beyond our reach.

Join the IEEE Pittsburgh Section Life Members Affinity Group and Power & Energy Society for an evening at Saint Vincent College with astronomer Dr. Daniel E. Vanden Berk. The presentation will explore the James Webb Space Telescope, the science behind its remarkable capabilities, and what its observations are revealing about the universe.

Following the presentation, attendees will have an opportunity for questions and discussion.

James Webb Space Telescope: A New View of the Universe

The James Webb Space Telescope is providing astronomers with an extraordinary new window into the cosmos. Dr. Vanden Berk will discuss Webb's capabilities and the astronomical science being conducted with the observatory, including observations of distant galaxies and other objects that are helping scientists investigate the history and evolution of the universe.

The presentation will highlight Webb observations and explain what astronomers can learn from them, placing the telescope's discoveries within the broader context of modern astronomy and our evolving understanding of the cosmos.

Biography:

Dr. Daniel E. Vanden Berk is an observational astronomer and Associate Professor of Physics at Saint Vincent College. His research focuses primarily on the extragalactic universe, with research interests including active galaxies and quasars, cosmology, ultraviolet astronomy, and gamma-ray bursts.

Dr. Vanden Berk earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Chicago and his B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has worked with numerous ground- and space-based observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA Swift Observatory, NASA GALEX Observatory, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
