Butch Shadwell of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

Patents, trademarks, and copyrights are discussed.  Ways to protect inventions and software are specifically included.

Biography:

A retired consultant in applied physics and electronics, Butch Shadwell has been working in science and technology since he was 12 years old.  In his extraordinary career he has worked with almost every kind of technology in the electronics industry, including applied research and development in nuclear medicine, opto-electronics, electronic warfare, robotics, industrial automation, machine vision, artificial intelligence, digital television, special sensors and embedded systems.

He has 9 US patents and more than 60 proprietary inventions.  And he has published 5 peer reviewed papers and over 100 technical articles in technical journals and newsletters.  He has twice received the IEEE Excellence in Technical Publishing award.

A Life Senior member of the IEEE, he is active on the IEEE Energy Policy Committee and the IEEE Research Policy Committee. In 2009 he was selected as the international chair of the United Nations Foundation - Humanitarian Technology Challenge on Reliable Electricity, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC.  And, in that capacity completed multiple projects in Nicaragua and Kenya.

He has also completed humanitarian projects in Canada and Puerto Rico with grants from the IEEE Power and Energy Society and IEEE MOVE, and he was one of the original designers of the MOVE disaster response vehicle project.

He was a committee chair for the 2007 International Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Robotics and Automation.  Also, he was the chair of the 2013 Southeastcon technical conference in Jacksoonville.  There were 770 attendees from around the world, 145 peer reviewed papers.

He has conducted sponsored research at Carnegie-Mellon Robotics Institute and received over $1 million in grants for his work in machine vision.  

For twenty-three years he had a successful consulting practice developing new technologies for dozens of companies.  His clients included multi-billion dollar companies, and as an active volunteer in IEEE has been a featured speaker at many universities around the world.
