Workshop: Modern Software Development in the AI Era

AI is rapidly changing how software is designed, built, tested, and deployed, raising important questions about modern software-engineering practice and how the next generation of developers should be prepared. This workshop examines these emerging practices through industry and experiential-learning perspectives.

FAU AI Hootcamp, developed by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, provides a concrete testbed: a 10-week, industry-informed pilot in which students and recent alumni worked as individual developers with AI to build and deploy real software products. Beyond learning new tools, the deeper challenge was developing the engineering judgment to direct, evaluate, and take responsibility for AI-generated work.

The workshop presents what we tried, what the pilot produced, what industry participants see in the results, and what the next generation of software developers needs to know how to do.

What Did They Build?

Across 21 projects, Hootcamp builders tackled real problems in healthcare, government, compliance, logistics, energy, real estate, scientific research, education, and software engineering, working with data ranging from NASA light curves and NIH/CDC health information to FDOT roadway and government development data.
