Next-Generation Wave Energy Harvesting with Dielectric Elastomer Generators
The IEEE Schenectady Section and the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation
(DEIS) Chapter are pleased to invite you to a presentation by Professor Robert J.
Young (University of Manchester), Next-Generation Wave Energy Harvesting with
Dielectric Elastomer Generators.
This presentation will provide an overview of oceanwave-energy conversion using
dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs), summarizing current developments and future
insights into DEG-based renewable-energy harvesting. Professor Young will also
describe the use of DEGs as strain sensors. This talk presents an enabling role that
dielectric materials play in emerging applications beyond electrical insulation systems.

Next-Generation Wave Energy Harvesting with Dielectric Elastomer Generators
Biography:
Professor Robert J. Young is the emeritus professor of polymer science and technology at the University of Manchester. His expertise lies in structure–property relationships in polymers and composites. He has worked with a wide range of polymeric materials including natural rubber, nitrile rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, silicone rubber, and thermoplastic elastomers reinforced with nanomaterials such as graphene. He holds fellowships of the UK Royal Society, UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Academy of Europe.
