Topic:
Synchro-Waveform Measurements for Modern Power Quality and Event Detection
This session explains the evolution from conventional synchrophasor (PMU) technology to synchro-waveform–based measurement units (WMUs) and why this shift matters for modern power quality monitoring, particularly in systems with increasing data center integration.
The presentation introduces continuous waveform streaming and recording (CWS&R) and describes its technical foundation, including WMU devices that stream waveform data at 14.4 ksps to support high-resolution, time-domain analysis.
A live demonstration using the SEL‑T35 Time-Domain Power Monitor shows how CWS&R enables virtual PMU and virtual metering functions. The demonstration illustrates how traditional measurements, such as harmonics, are derived from waveform data and how event notifications support abnormal condition detection and diagnostics.
The session also introduces the IEEE PES Task Force on Big Data Analytics for Synchro-Waveform Measurements and references its technical report, Synchro-Waveform Measurements and Data Analytics in Power Systems (PES‑TR127, December 2024).
