During this seminar, the invited speaker will give a presentation titled "Small Modular Reactors: An Overview, Implications for Alberta, and Research on BWR-Based SMR Systems". Please see the abstract below:
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are emerging as a promising nuclear energy technology that could provide reliable, low-carbon, and flexible energy for a range of electricity and industrial applications. Their smaller size, modular design, and potential for flexible deployment have generated significant interest as countries explore pathways toward energy security and decarbonization.
This presentation provides an overview of SMR technology, including key characteristics, reactor concepts and potential benefits. It will then examine the potential implications of SMRs for Alberta, with particular emphasis on their role in supporting reliable energy supply, industrial applications, and the decarbonization of energy-intensive sectors.
The presentation will also highlight research being conducted at the University of Alberta on advanced nuclear energy systems. In particular, the research focuses on a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR)-based SMR and the development of a detailed non-linear digital-twin. The digital-twin provides a virtual representation of the reactor system and can be used to investigate system performance and its potential integration with emerging energy applications. The presentation will conclude by discussing the opportunities and challenges associated with advancing SMR technologies and their potential role in the future energy landscape in Alberta.

Biography:
Hasini Kasthuriarachchi is a MSc student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta, specializing in Energy Systems under the supervision of Prof. Venkata Dinavahi. Her research focuses on the modeling and development of a digital-twin for a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR)-based Small Modular Reactor (SMR), with an emphasis on understanding its non-linear dynamic behaviour and potential applications in emerging energy systems. She is passionate about advancing sustainable energy technologies and contributing to the development of innovative solutions for future energy systems.
