Every day, we use technologies powered by cloud computing—from streaming movies and online gaming to artificial intelligence, social media, and mobile apps. But what exactly is “the cloud,” and why has it become one of the fastest-growing career fields in technology?

The session will introduce the BAT in Cloud Computing program at NVC, highlighting educational pathways, industry certifications, hands-on learning experiences, and career opportunities in the field. Through real-world examples, students will gain insight into how cloud technologies support innovation and how they can begin preparing for careers in this exciting and rapidly evolving profession. The talk will also describe our portfolio of pathways to engineering fields that are designed for our students at NVC. 

In addition, Caroline will share her journey into cloud computing and provide a student perspective on the BAT in Cloud Computing program. She will highlight what students learn in the program, how classroom knowledge and technical skills can be applied to real-world projects, and how learning opportunities beyond the classroom can further support professional growth. She will also share her future educational and career goals in cloud computing and emerging technologies.

Biography:

Dr. Qiaoying (Joy) Zhou holds a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Educational Technology and E-Learning from Northcentral University (2009–2012), an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico (2001–2003), and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Beijing University of Chemical Technology (1993–1997). With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Zhou has served in a variety of academic and leadership roles, including Chair of the Math & Engineering Department (2016–2024) and Coordinator of the Engineering (2013–2016) and Nanotechnology (2007–2013) programs.

Dr. Zhou is an IEEE Senior Member and currently serves as a faculty member in the Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in Cloud Computing program at Northwest Vista College. Her professional interests include cloud computing, artificial intelligence, electrical and computer engineering, emerging technologies, and engineering education. She is passionate about helping students develop practical technology skills, connect classroom learning with real-world applications, and prepare for careers in rapidly evolving technology fields.

Caroline Medina is an undergraduate student at Northwest Vista College pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cloud Computing, graduating in December 2026. She recently completed a USDA-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REEU) program at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she worked on an AI-powered crop inspection, sorting, and packaging system integrating cloud computing, computer vision, robotics, and IoT. She also works as a Broadcast Engineer / IT Intern at Texas Public Radio, supporting on-premises IT and broadcast infrastructure.
