This talk will focus on learnings derived from the field experiences of integration of two critical verticals of Energy, Electricity and Transportation vectors. The presentation will first cover broader aspects of renewable energy (RE) and its associated challenges on the grid side, followed by field level experiences of RE integration from different countries with primary focus on Indian power sector. The second part of the presentation will focus on electrification of the transport sector including EV integration with electric grid and learnings derived from various field pilots of V2G and V2H conducted in India over past 3-4 years period. The presentation will also cover how transportation and Electricity sectors can jointly play a complimentary role in decarbonising overall energy sector.

Biography:

Zakir is an electrical engineer by training, with PhD from Aalborg University, Denmark. He has been working in renewable energy (RE) and electric mobility sector for past 15 years, with around 5 years of RE industry experience in Europe. He, in close collaboration with the Danish National transmission system operator, Energinet.dk, has extensively worked on the Danish grid. He has been also working closely on Indian Grid from transmission to distribution level, on both the State and National grid for past over a decade. He is currently working as Professor at the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, and leading Grid Integration Lab (GIL) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, where the focus of his work continues to be on grid integration of renewables, grid integration of Electric Vehicles (EVs), Grid integration of Data centres, grid code regulations, power system operation under high penetration of renewable generation and EVs. He is an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, Editor of IETE Technical Review, Guest Editor of International Journal of Power and Energy Systems, a Senior Member of IEEE, IEEE Power & Energy Society, IEEE Smart Grid Community, and IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. He is on various technical and R&D committees including India Energy Stack (IES) task force (Ministry of Power, India), RE integration and grid stability related committees (Ministry of Power), R&D Council (NIWE, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India), IEC committees on wind turbine generator, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) making committees on wind turbine generator and EV charging infrastructure etc. His areas of research interest include grid & system integration of renewable energy (wind, solar power, grid scale battery storage, hydrogen storage/electrolyser), power system dynamics, EV charging infrastructure and EV grid integration, distribution systems, smart and micro grids, and hydrogen storage. He is recipient of Outstanding Editor Award from IEEE, Research excellence Award from IIT Bombay, ‘IREDA-NIWE Award for Best Research Work in Wind Energy’ among other academic and industry awards. He is also recipient of Young Faculty Award IIT Bombay, and several best paper and Industry awards.
