Biography:
Biography of Dr. Arun Uniyal
Dr. Arun Uniyal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at Institute of Technology (I.T.) Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand, India, where he has been serving since October 2013. He has also contributed to academic administration in various institutional responsibilities, including Dean Academics and Assistant Registrar, and has previously served as the Controller of Examinations.
Dr. Uniyal received his Ph.D. in the area of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) biosensors and his M.Tech. in Wireless Communication from Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun. His research interests primarily focus on optical biosensors, plasmonics, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), Lossy Mode Resonance (LMR), nanomaterials, and advanced sensing technologies.
His research work involves the development and numerical analysis of novel optical sensing structures using materials such as metals, metal oxides, two-dimensional nanomaterials, and dielectric layers. He has worked extensively with Transfer Matrix Method (TMM), MATLAB-based numerical modelling, angular interrogation techniques, and electromagnetic analysis for the design and optimization of high-performance sensors.
Dr. Uniyal has contributed to research in diverse sensing applications, including biomedical diagnostics, tissue detection, pathogen monitoring, chemical and biochemical sensing, and refractive-index-based detection. His recent research interests also include the integration of Machine Learning (ML) approaches with optical sensing technologies to enhance sensing performance and classification capabilities.
He has 60+ research publications and 5 patents to his credit and continues to actively contribute to research, teaching, academic administration, and student development. He is particularly interested in encouraging students to engage in research, innovation, emerging technologies, professional societies, and skill-based learning.
As an academician and researcher, Dr. Uniyal is committed to creating opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with practical applications and emerging technological developments. He actively promotes platforms such as IEEE, MOOCs, workshops, projects, technical competitions, and research activities to help students develop technical, professional, leadership, and innovation skills.
