The IEEE Smart Agri-food Systems (SmartAg) Initiative brings together technologies across sensing, AI, connectivity, automation, and data analytics to improve how food is produced, processed, distributed, and consumed. Rather than focusing only on agriculture, SmartAg takes a whole supply chain approach, addressing challenges such as food safety, traceability, sustainability, and waste reduction. This session will highlight key applications, emerging technologies, and opportunities for collaboration that can help build a more efficient and resilient global food system.

Dr. John Verboncoeur

Biography:

John P. Verboncoeur (FIEEE) Ph.D. (1992) in nuclear engineering, University of California at Berkeley (UCB). Following employment at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, he co-founded and chaired the UCB Computational Engineering Science program (2001-2010). In 2015, he co-founded the Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU), where he currently serves as Senior Associate Dean for Research. His research interests are in theoretical and computational plasma physics, applied to low temperature plasmas, fusion, particle accelerators, nonequilibrium plasmas and high power microwaves. He authored/coauthored over 500 journal articles and conference papers, with 8,000+ citations. He served as President of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, Acting VP of IEEE Publications, Services, and Products Board, and 2023 VP-IEEE Technical Activities. He served on the Board of Directors for IEEE, the American Center for Mobility national proving ground and Physics of Plasmas Editorial Board, the US-DOE Fusion Energy Science Advisory Committee and the Sandia National Laboratories Grand Challenge External Advisory Board. He leads the IEEE Smart Agri-food Systems initiative and IEEE SpaceTech efforts. He led startups including computerized fitness equipment, digital health systems, distributed publication software including a Big-Three consumer credit report, and a role in the US Postal Service mail forwarding system.
