IEEE Day at Vertiv – Columbus Section
Join the IEEE Columbus Section for a special IEEE Day celebration hosted at Vertiv! This event brings together IEEE members, students, and engineering professionals for an evening of networking, technology, and an inside look at Vertiv’s work supporting critical digital infrastructure.
Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Vertiv facility and learn more about the technologies and engineering behind the power and thermal management systems that keep data centers and other mission-critical environments operating reliably.
Following the tours, we will gather for dinner and a presentation, providing additional opportunities to connect with fellow IEEE members and professionals from across the Columbus engineering community.
Tentative Schedule
5:00 PM – Doors Open & Networking
6:00 PM – Vertiv Facility Tours
7:00 PM – Dinner & Presentation
8:00 PM – Event Conclusion
Safety Requirements:
Because portions of the event will take place within an active Vertiv facility, appropriate PPE will be required for the tour. Safety glasses and hard hats will be provided as needed. Attendees are encouraged wear appropriate closed-toe/hard-toe footwear and follow all safety instructions provided during the event.

Ian Oberdorf
History of IEEE and Vertiv
Join Ian Oberdorf for a brief journey through the history of IEEE and Vertiv. The presentation will explore the origins and evolution of both organizations, highlighting important milestones in electrical engineering, power technology, and the development of the critical infrastructure industry. Attendees will gain historical context for how more than a century of engineering innovation has helped shape the technologies and systems supporting today's increasingly connected world.
Biography:
Ian Oberdorf is a Power Management Technical Support Engineer at Vertiv and an active volunteer within the IEEE Columbus Section, where he serves as Co-Chair of the Control Systems Society. His professional background spans electrical engineering, industrial automation, technical support, software development, and process automation.
Throughout his career, Ian has worked at the intersection of hardware and software, supporting industrial electrical systems while developing tools and automation to improve engineering and support processes. His experience includes control systems, power management, industrial communications, software development, and robotic process automation. He has also served as a UL 508A Manufacturing Technical Representative and has taken active roles in technical training and continuous improvement initiatives.
Ian is passionate about engineering education, professional development, and finding practical ways to make complex technical concepts easier to understand. Through his involvement with IEEE, he works to strengthen connections among engineers, students, industry professionals, and the broader Central Ohio technical community.
