Join us for a technical talk by Mr. Nicholas Piaquadio, Senior Planning Engineer (Reliability Planning) at the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO)


Talk Summary: 
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of New York’s electric grid, planning for future energy needs, and managing competitive wholesale electricity markets. The analysis performed across NYISO includes power flow analysis, transient stability analysis, short-circuit analysis, among others. This talk will give an overview of the work that planning engineers perform and emerging trends impacting New York’s electric grid.

Nicholas of New York Independent System Operator (NYISO)

Biography:

Mr. Nicholas joined the NYISO in 2021 and worked in Interconnections prior to his current role in Reliability Planning. Nicholas supports a wide range of teams and various technical studies throughout planning. He represents the NYISO at the Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative (EIPC) Large Load Working Group and was elected vice chair of the Transmission Analysis Working Group in 2025. He has served as the technical lead for interconnection studies on a variety of high-impact projects including data centers, large semiconductor manufacturing facilities, and offshore wind.

Nicholas has advanced through roles of increasing responsibility—from Associate Planning Engineer to Planning Engineer, and now Senior Planning Engineer. His work supports ensuring compliance with reliability standards and facilitating grid reliability.

Nicholas is a PhD candidate at Binghamton University, where he earned a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2020. His published research proposes new methods for power systems topology detection under load uncertainty and practical methods of islanding detection for inverter-based resources in microgrids.
