ENIAC at 80 : India at 80 & beyond

Remembering the ENIAC, The Hyderabad Chapter of the IEEE Computer Society is pleased to invite you to this Symposium with a unique perspective of learning from the past 8 decades into 2047 standing at India@80.

In 1846, the rise of Electronic Telegraph changed the world. Triggered global undersea cables, global communication, information security concerns, weather forecasting, formation of the ITU and time zones.

In 1946, another electronic innovation, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer)) was invented, ending the era of mechanical calculators.  The first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer. 

In 1947, India was liberated. In its 80 year of indepednance, a software services superpower, India now looks at 2047 as a significant atmanirbhar Bharat goals. It is developing unique Digital Public Infrastruture. AI is evolving fast and new security and privacy measures are evolving.

 In this context of India 2047,  looking at the future, this symposium reviews 80 years of computing history to learn from it as we build the future. Join us for this Nolan-movie like time travel Journey. 

 IEEE Fellows who have contributed to advances in computing, seen the transitions to modern computing talk us through the history and lessons for future computing, lay out the Indian  future of AI, population scale soverign computing infrastructure. and the upcoming field of privacy engineering. A privacy engineer, a term non existent, non imagined, in 1946 makes us ready for the future with must have design elements.

As computing moves into Quantum which gives us speeds improvement like ENIAC gave over mechanical ones, data centers consume gigawatts, like ENIAC consumed 150 KWatts, similar challenges of thermodynamics, power, floor space talent etc crop up. AI too was thought of then, look at it now and where it is going. This was one machine, where security meant physical. A nation had one ENIAC, now everyone and everything have interconnected computing on them. So we have privacy concerns.We now talk of population scale compute infrastructure, and talk of inter planetary networks, (Voyager spacecrafts still send signals). Past solutions : what can be stopped, what can we start, what can we continue?

So we dont forget history. So we learn from history, So we make smarter designs for the future.

Artificial Intelligence in the era of hypercomputing

 In the  70+ years after the late John McCarthy coined the phrase "Artificial Intelligence", the subject has changed beyond recognition.  In this talk I will begin by discussing the early days of AI which started at the same time as the ENIAC, and trace its evolution until the present era of hypercomputing and Large Language Models.  Emphasis will be placed on the challenges faced by researchers as well as practitioners in the age of mega AI service providers.  In particular, what should students be taught?  How do researchers safeguard their intellectual property if a company that provides an AI platform "snoops" on the researchers' prompts?  And so on.

   A world-renowned control theorist, Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), and IEEE Fellow. Previously served as the Founding Director of CAIR (DRDO), Executive Vice President at TCS Advanced Technology Center, and Cecil & Ida Green Chair at UT Dallas. His work spans control systems, statistical learning theory, and computing architectures.

Computing Directions for Atmanirbhar (Self-Sovereign) India: DPI and Indian Platforms

Atmanirbhar Bharat in technology is not about isolation — it is about earning the right to set the terms of identity, payment, data, and compute. This talk examines why India must build self-reliance across technology, economy, education, and innovation, especially as tariff wars, geopolitical tension, energy politics, and climate policy expose fragile global supply chains. We  trace how India has turned domestic digitisation into global leadership in Digital Public Infrastructure, exporting the India Stack — Aadhaar's identity layer, UPI's payment rails, the Ayushman Bharat health mission, DigiLocker's document infrastructure, and sovereign rails like RuPay, ONDC, and e-Rupee — to dozens of nations across the Global South. We then turn to the frontier: India's semiconductor, quantum, and AI missions, and the race to lead in 6G, alongside a maturing sovereign cybersecurity industry and a rapidly growing defense-export base. It closes by weighing the risks of this high-tech trajectory — the climate cost of gigawatt-scale data centres, and the danger that digital dependence excludes as easily as it includes — before arguing that a self-sovereign India, built the right way, can lead the Global South's digital future

 Director of IIIT Hyderabad and a leading authority on cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, and blockchain. Formerly Poonam & Prabhu Goel Chair Professor and Head of CSE at IIT Kanpur, where he founded and coordinated the C3i Cyber Security Center.
