Prof. S. Karmalkar of IIT Bhubaneswar

Topic:

100 Years of Field Effect Transistors and the India Semiconductor Mission

Biography:

Shreepad Karmalkar is Director, IIT Bhubaneswar. He has expertise in Semiconductor Devices and Education. He obtained B.Tech (1983) and accelerated PhD (1989) Degrees in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras. Prior to joining IIT Bhubaneswar, he was at IIT Madras as a faculty of Electrical Engineering for about three decades, and Head of the Teaching-Learning Centre for two years. His work on semiconductor devices includes development of manufacturing processes, a two year entrepreneurial attempt and over 85 widely viewed online video lectures. Recently, at IIT Bhubaneswar, he has been instrumental in establishing Silicon Carbide Research and Innovation Center (SiCRIC) that marks among the most significant industry- academia collaborations in the country, and Namo Semiconductor Laboratory. His work in the field of education includes about 15 online video lectures and 35 workshops on Introduction to Research, and over 80 Faculty Development sessions on various aspects of “How teachers can make a difference.”

Flexible Devices for Smart Sustainable Systems

Flexible electronics has become an enormously explored contender by research community due to its
applicability in a broad range of applications towards smart textiles and wearable electronics. Moreover,
flexible devices are being explored for eco-friendly and green electronics in recent times, to eventually
reduce the impact of increasing electronic waste (E-waste) on environment, which has become a severe issue
for earth, ecology, and health. Incorporation of biodegradable and edible materials in devices can be an
excellent way to address these issues along with incorporating sustainability. In various devices for flexible
electronics, organic transistors have been the most explored candidate due to their potential use for
multifunctional, circuit, and sensing applications. In fact, development of various types of flexible sensing
and energy harvesting devices has become very important for energy autonomous wearable electronics. In
this talk, firstly, approaches for designing high performance, multifunctional, and biodegradable organic
transistors will be presented. In addition, some strategies for development of low-cost wearable and smart
systems will also be discussed. Recent investigations on demonstration of synaptic transistors and devices for
human-machine interaction through sustainable ways will be discussed. These investigations highlight the
promise towards implementation of flexible and smart sustainable systems.

Biography:

Shree Prakash Tiwari had joined IIT Jodhpur as faculty member in 2011 where he is currently working as a Professor in Department of Electronics Engineering. He had completed his Ph.D. from EE Department, IIT Bombay in 2008, during which he had also worked at NTU Singapore for about 7 Months. Subsequently, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in School of ECE at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA from 2008-2011. Prof. Tiwari is a Senior Member of IEEE since 2016 and serves as member of various technical committees of IEEE Electron Devices Society. Prof. Tiwari was Visvesvaraya Young Faculty Research Fellow of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, for 2018-2023. He was part of Indian Delegate to attend Indo-German Frontiers of Engineering Symposium in Bremen, Germany (2022) organized by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Department of Science and Technology, followed by CONNECT Follow-up Programme Award by Humboldt Foundation and IGSTC-CONNECT Plus Award to visit and work in Germany in 2023. At IIT Jodhpur, he leads the Flexible Large Area Microelectronics (FLAME) Research Group, with focus towards sustainable electronics. For his contributions, he was conferred with “Institute Award for Research Excellence-2024, Senior Researcher Award (Engineering)” from IIT Jodhpur in 2024. Recently he was awarded with and “Institute Award for Research Excellence-2026 for high impact publications. Prof Tiwari co-authored about 200 research articles, including about 100 in journals of high repute primarily in IEEE, ACS, and Wiley.
