THINK DIFFERENT - COMPUTE SMARTER_First Webinar
The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Egypt Chapter officially launched its new webinar series, “THINK DIFFERENT. COMPUTE SMARTER — Ideas • Intelligence • Innovation,” with its first webinar held on 2 September 2026.
The series was introduced as a platform for meaningful conversations with researchers, academics, and experts working in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Intelligence. It aims to create an environment where students, researchers, engineers, and AI enthusiasts can learn from experienced professionals, exchange ideas, ask questions, and explore technologies beyond current trends.
The inaugural webinar featured Prof. Hani Hagras, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Essex and the Founder of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society – Egypt Chapter. Prof. Hagras is a recognized researcher in Artificial Intelligence, Fuzzy Systems, and Computational Intelligence, and is the recipient of the IEEE Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award 2026.
For the first session, the series explored the topic “Fuzzy Systems and the Way Towards True Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Real-World Applications.” The session addressed one of the important questions facing Artificial Intelligence today: how can AI systems become not only intelligent, but also understandable and explainable?
The webinar highlighted the role of Fuzzy Systems in developing AI solutions that can provide more interpretable and human-understandable reasoning, particularly in real-world applications. It also provided attendees with an opportunity to gain insights from an experienced academic and researcher and to engage with ideas connecting Computational Intelligence, Explainable AI, and practical applications.

Fuzzy Systems and the Way Towards True Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Real-World Applications
The inaugural webinar featured Prof. Hani Hagras, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Essex, UK. He is the Director of the University’s Computational Intelligence Centre, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group, and Director of Impact within the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering.
His research focuses on Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Fuzzy Systems, Computational Intelligence, and Data Science, with applications across areas such as intelligent robotics, cyber-physical systems, finance, neuroscience, and intelligent control.
Prof. Hagras is a Fellow of IEEE (FIEEE) and has authored more than 500 papers in international journals, conferences, and books. He also holds 11 industrial patents in the areas of Explainable AI and Cyber-Physical Systems.
He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Essex and B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt.
In 2026, Prof. Hagras received the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Pioneer Award on Fuzzy Systems, recognizing his theoretical and practical contributions to Type-2 Fuzzy Systems, Fuzzy Embedded Agents, and Explainable Artificial Intelligence.
With his extensive research background and contributions to Computational Intelligence and Explainable AI, Prof. Hagras was a fitting speaker for the launch of the THINK DIFFERENT. COMPUTE SMARTER webinar series.
