Empowering Women in Academia: Growth, Leadership, and WorkLife balance


The Women in Power Forum aims to provide an open and inspiring platform for female scholars to exchange experiences, share insights, and explore pathways toward sustainable personal and professional development. This forum will bring together women scholars at different stages of their careers to discuss the opportunities and challenges they encounter in research, teaching, academic service, and everyday life.The discussion will address key topics such as developing a clear and sustainable research direction, building interdisciplinary collaborations, improving teaching effectiveness, mentoring students, and preparing for career transitions and leadership roles. Invited speakers will share their personal journeys and practical strategies for making important career decisions, overcoming setbacks, managing multiple responsibilities, and establishing supportive professional networks. The forum will also examine how female scholars can develop their own leadership styles, contribute to a more inclusive academic culture, and create positive changes within their institutions and professional communities. Recognizing that academic success is closely connected to personal well-being, the forum will further explore the relationship between professional commitment and family or personal life. Rather than seeking a single definition of balance, the discussion will highlight diverse approaches to setting priorities, managing time, maintaining resilience, and finding fulfillment throughout different stages of life and career.Through the exchange of experiences across generations and disciplines, the forum seeks to strengthen mutual understanding and support among women in academia. It will encourage participants to reflect on their own aspirations, identify practical strategies for future development, and build meaningful connections. Ultimately, the forum hopes to empower more women to pursue academic excellence, embrace leadership opportunities, and shape fulfilling careers and lives with confidence.

The Role of Gender in Career Development

Men and women differ in their personalities, behaviors, and emotions. These differences are not results of biology, culture expectation, and individual experience. The differences could be subtle, and other times quite significant. This speech first presents some common differences between men and women. The influence of the differences in career development in engineering is then discussed. Finally, effective use of these differences in good ways can enhance your career development.

Biography:

Elected as an IEEE Fellow in 2024 for contributions to DC distribution protection and DC shipboard power system architectures. Served as Co-Chair of the Technical Committee for the IEEE International Conference on DC Microgrids (ICDCM) in 2021 and 2024, and as General Chair in 2026. Was with Florida State University from 2004 to 2009, and with ABB Corporate Research Center from 2009 to 2024, serving as Senior Principal Scientist. Conducted industrial research on distribution networks and microgrids, and led the product development of the first onboard 1-kV DC system and solid-state circuit breakers. Has published over 80 journal and conference papers and holds more than 20 granted international patents.

Topic: Research on Undergraduate Innovative Talent Cultivation System for EnergyPower Industry under the DualCarbonStrategy

To meet the requirements of the DualCarbon Strategy and the construction of newtype power systems, our university has carried out systematic reforms for undergraduate talent cultivation in energy and electric power relying on its over 60year educational accumulation, addressing the drawbacks of the traditional talenttraining system lagging behind industrial changes. Targeting major problems including outdated specialty layout, monotonous training modes, obsolete curriculum systems and insufficient practical support, we have established a talenttraining system featuring interdisciplinary integration. An integrated specialty framework of coremajorinterdisciplinaryis constructed, together with composite electricpoweroriented training directions. We implement the integrated education mode, set up experimental classes for outstanding engineers and schoolenterprise joint training, build modular curricula and virtualphysical combined practical platforms, and strengthen highquality teaching teams. The reform has achieved fruitful outcomes. Teachers and students have won numerous national and provincial awards, forming a distinctive talenttraining model with wide influence.

Biography:

Dean of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at Changsha University of Science & Technology, and Team Leader of the National Key Laboratory of Power Grid Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Recipient of national-level youth talent programs. His/Her research interests include traveling-wave protection and fault location, rapid and secure fault handling in distribution networks, and applications of artificial intelligence in power systems. He/She has led 2 projects under the National Key R&D Program and 4 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), as well as more than 20 enterprise-sponsored research projects. He/She holds 51 granted invention patents in China, the United States, and the European Union, has published 67 representative papers, and authored 3 monographs. He/She received the First Prize of the China Electric Power Science and Technology Progress Award in 2024 and the Gold Medal at the Geneva International Invention Exhibition in 2021.

Associate Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Sichuan University, and a Young Changjiang Scholar under the Chang Jiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education. He/She is dedicated to teaching and research on power quality and high-quality power supply. He/She has received 11 provincial and industry-level science and technology progress awards, led the formulation of one national standard, and published over 80 papers in SCI and EI indexed journals as first or corresponding author.
