Beyond connectivity: The Next Era of Intelligent and Reliable Wi-Fi
The evolution of Wi-Fi technology is entering a critical transition phase. Moving beyond the historical focus on peak data rates, next-generation wireless architectures are expanding across three core dimensions: extreme reliability, multi-band spectrum utilization, and integrated intelligence. This talk examines how emerging IEEE 802.11 standards collaboratively address these evolving system requirements.
We will go through the architecture of Wi-Fi 8 (IEEE 802.11bn) and its focus on Ultra-High Reliability (UHR). We will then introduce integrated millimeter wave (IMMW, IEEE 802.11bq), which extends Wi-Fi to millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum to support high-capacity, low-latency applications. Furthermore, the session explores expanding Wi-Fi capabilities beyond traditional data communications—spotlighting Wi-Fi Ranging (IEEE 802.11az / 802.11bk) and Wi-Fi Sensing (IEEE 802.11bf), alongside advancements in AI-driven network adaptability and robust security frameworks. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of how these standards jointly define the future of enterprise, industrial, residential, and spatial-computing connectivity.
Biography:
Dr. Cheng Chen is a Senior Staff Wireless Standards Engineer at Intel Corporation, where he leads Intel’s standardization initiatives in next-generation wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi Sensing (IEEE 802.11bf), Integrated Millimeter Wave (IEEE 802.11bq), and Wi-Fi Alliance certification programs.
Dr. Chen serves as the Editor for IEEE 802.11bq, the Technical Editor for the Wi-Fi 8 Technical Task Group, and the Vice Chair for the Wi-Fi Sensing Task Group in the Wi-Fi Alliance. He is an appointed IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Distinguished Lecturer for the 2025–2026 term and serves as a Guest Editor for npj Wireless Technology.
Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2016 and 2013, respectively, and his B.E. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2011.
