Abstract:

Inflammation is a silent driver underlying the onset and escalation of chronic diseases and cancer, making its precise monitoring essential for early interception, informed clinical management, and effective prevention. A growing body of evidence now establishes that cytokines and other inflammatory biomarkers, secreted by innate immune cells, serve as critical molecular sentinels in inflammation-related pathologies. Yet, a persistent barrier to progress lies in the scarcity of tools capable of tracking these signals in real time, with the sensitivity and specificity needed to guide timely, life-altering therapeutic decisions. In this talk, I will present recent work on engineering next-generation sensing technologies integrated into microfluidic biochips, wearable systems, and implantable in vivo devices to achieve digital, dynamic quantification of inflammation. Focusing on chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis and Parkinson's disease, I will illuminate both the promise and the challenges of designing biosensors for continuous chemical monitoring within integrated wearable and implantable platforms toward predictive, preemptive, and personalized health care.

Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the School of Medicine, Associate Dean of Graduate School, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China.

Biography:

Professor Guozhen, founder of the Biomedical Engineering Programme at CUHK-Shenzhen's School of Medicine, bridges academia and industry with a singular vision: transforming chronic disease care through intelligent biosensing. Her team has pioneered CRISPR/Cas biosensors quantifying inflammation both at the point of care and through real-time in vivo monitoring. Recognized as a top 0.05% scholar in biosensors by ScholarGPS, she holds fellowships from the RSC, IET, and IPEM, alongside CChem chartered status. A 2020 recipient of the Georgina Sweet Award for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science, she champions diversity in STEM. As Associate Editor of ACS Sensors and Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Sensors Council (2026-2028), her influence spans the globe. Yet her impact is equally tangible beyond the lab through leadership roles at AstraZeneca and AgaMatrix, and as founder of Behealthy Med Tech in Shenzhen and co-founder of Bio-Sens Tech in Sydney, translating innovation into life-changing diagnostics.
