Abstract: In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), Prof. Erdem Topsakal explores how AI is reshaping teaching, research, and the very identity of higher education - specifically radio frequency engineering research and education. The talk examines the transition from information-based learning to intelligence-augmented learning, where AI acts as a personalized tutor, research assistant, and creative collaborator.

The presentation discusses how educators must evolve from traditional knowledge transmitters into intellectual mentors who guide students in developing critical thinking, ethics, and innovation alongside AI tools. It also addresses emerging challenges such as academic integrity, RF engineering workforce transformation, and the growing importance of interdisciplinary fluency. Ultimately, the talk argues that academia should not resist artificial intelligence in RF education and research but strategically integrate it—transforming universities into environments where human creativity and machine intelligence evolve together.

Short Bio: Prof. Erdem Topsakal is a researcher, educator, and innovator whose work lies at the intersection of electromagnetics, artificial intelligence, and medical technology. With extensive expertise in applied electromagnetics and biomedical applications. As an educator, Dr. Topsakal is passionate about making complex mathematical and AI concepts intuitive, practical, and inspiring for students from diverse international backgrounds. His work bridges theory and practice, engineering and philosophy, and is consistently driven by curiosity and innovation. In the past 3 years, He has developed two popular courses at VCU- ENGR-125: Practical AI and ENGR-126: Vibe Coding with AI. These courses provide hands-on learning to students from different disciplines to learn and integrate AI in their education. Some areas include arts, engineering, business, and medicine.

Dr. Topsakal was the Senior Associate Dean at the College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University between July 2022 and January, 2026. Before that, he was the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Chair at VCU between May 2015 and July 2022. His research areas include antenna design and analysis for military and medical applications. He has published over 200 journal and conference papers, book chapters, and a book in these areas.
