IEEE IES/IAS Strathmore Student Chapter & IEEE AP-S Dedan Kimathi University of Technology Student Chapter Webinar Series

Session 3: From Concept to Commissioning: Engineering an Automation System

Industrial automation projects rarely fail at the concept stage - they fail in the messy middle, where design assumptions meet real plant conditions, procurement timelines, and commissioning deadlines. This session gives a deeper look at understanding the  full lifecycle: how an automation system moves from an initial engineering concept, through design, integration, and testing, to a fully commissioned solution running on a live production floor.

Joining us is Mr. Geoffrey Nyandega, a Senior Mechatronics Engineer and key leader at Synkron Africa, with  years of experience in industrial automation and manufacturing optimization. He'll walk us through what it actually takes to engineer an automation system that survives contact with a real plant - the design decisions, the integration challenges, and the commissioning checks that separate a working system from a paper design.

What to expect:

  • The engineering journey from concept and design to installation and commissioning
  • Key decisions and trade-offs at each phase of an automation project
  • Common pitfalls when moving from design to real-world deployment
  • Lessons from live industrial automation projects across Africa

📅 Wednesday, 16th September
🕗 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM (EAT)

From Concept to Commissioning: Engineering an Automation System

Mr. Geoffrey Nyandega is a Senior Mechatronics Engineer and key leader at Synkron Africa, an industrial engineering and automation firm headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. He brings over 14 years of experience in industrial automation and manufacturing optimization, working across East and Central Africa to help industrial plants design, integrate, and commission automated systems.

At Synkron Africa, Mr. Geoffrey has played a leading role in major technical initiatives, including the rollout of the Synkron Training Center - a regional hub focused on advanced industrial systems and automation training for the region. His work spans across industrial automation, mechatronics, and plant optimization, alongside a strong focus on building technical capacity through structured training programs and digital learning frameworks.

With a career grounded in hands-on engineering practice, Geoffrey has been closely involved in taking automation projects from concept through to full commissioning on live production floors -experience he draws on to mentor engineers and share practical, field-tested insights with the wider industrial automation community.
