Digital Operation of Electric Grids: Advancements in Power System Protection & Relaying
The IEEE North Saskatchewan Section is pleased to welcome Dr. Ramakrishna (Rama) Gokaraju, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, for a technical presentation on advancements in power system protection and relaying.
Keeping the lights on is becoming increasingly complex as electric grids face growing pressure to deliver more power over existing infrastructure. This presentation will explore advances in digital protection, real-time stability prediction, and methods to help prevent large-scale blackouts.
IEEE members, students, researchers, and industry professionals are welcome to attend in person or online.

Digital Operation of Electric Grids: Advancements in Power System Protection & Relaying
Digital Operation of Electric Grids: Advancements in Power System Protection & Relaying
Keeping the lights “on”, an axiom in power systems engineering has taken on a new level of complexity with increasing pressure on the existing network to deliver more power over existing infrastructure.
This presentation will discuss some of the current advancements in power system protection/relaying: High-Speed Digital Relaying Scheme for transmission systems with half-cycle operating times, incremental quantities based techniques for high-speed relaying, real-time transient stability prediction in electric grids and a Remedial Action Scheme (RAS) scheme applying intentional islanding to prevent large-scale blackouts, Fault Location in Solar Farms, Utilizing Wide Area Measurements (WAMS) for online islanding detection. Online applications using AI/Machine Learning techniques such as Spectral Clustering, Reinforcement Learning, Agent Based Scheme, Lissajous analysis will be discussed in the presentation.
Biography:
Prof. Ramakrishna Gokaraju received his Bachelor of Engineering degree (with Distinction) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy, India in April 1992. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada, in 1996 and 2000, respectively. He was a Research Scientist with the Alberta Research Council and a Staff Software Engineer with IBM Toronto Lab. Since 2003, he has been with the Electrical & Computer
Engineering Department at the University of Saskatchewan where he is currently a professor in the department. His research work is on power system protection and small modular nuclear reactors (electrical side aspects) for power and energy applications. His
research is funded by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grant and the NSERC-Canada Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Small Modular Reactor Grant.
