Invited lecture "From Tactile Internet-Enabled Mobile Networks to a Self-Sustainable Smart Ocean" by Amin Ebrahimzadeh (MARBLE)
Summary: The Tactile Internet envisions transmitting not only audio, video, and data, but also the sense of touch, thus converting data-delivery networks into skillset-delivery networks. This enables ultra-low-latency and highly reliable interaction between humans and machines in real time. Realizing this vision motivated a decade of research spanning passive optical networks, converged fiber-wireless (FiWi) architectures, multi-access edge computing (MEC), and the coordination of physical and digital tasks between humans and robots. In this talk, we give a brief overview of the evolution of telecommunication networks and then highlight three paradigm shifts that define the transition toward next-generation 6G networks: (i) a cyber-physical continuum, in which communication networks deliver not only data, but also computation and physical action; (ii) sustainability, calling for energy-autonomous network operation; and (iii) services beyond communication, which involves smart inference and decision-making. These three shifts directly motivate our vision of a self-sustainable Smart Ocean and the maritime IoT research program at MARBLE, where the computation and actuation planes will be integrated into the network’s data plane. The talk will also present the group's research vision, open problems, and opportunities for future collaborations.
Speaker Bio: Amin Ebrahimzadeh received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Tabriz, Iran, in 2009 and 2011, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree (Hons.) in telecommunications from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), Montreal, QC, Canada, in 2019. From 2019 to 2026, he was a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate with Concordia University, Montreal. He is currently a Senior Researcher with MARBLE, Centre of Excellence in Maritime Robotics and Technologies for Sustainable Blue Economy, Zagreb, Croatia. His research interests include maritime Internet of Things, 6G networks, Tactile Internet, fiber-wireless networks, and multi-access edge computing. He has been awarded the 2019–2020 INRS Best Doctoral Thesis Prize for his research on the Tactile Internet. He was a recipient of the Doctoral Research Scholarship from the B2X Program of Fonds de Recherche du Québec-Nature et Technologies (FRQNT). He is the Lead Author of the book “Toward 6G: A New Era of Convergence” (Wiley-IEEE Press, 2021).
