IEEE PES Vancouver Chapter is pleased to announce the following technical talk at the BC Hydro Edmonds campus.

The theme of the talk is: " Advanced Metering Infrastructure".

Electrical metering has always been more than a billing mechanism, it has defined the boundaries of what utilities could see, know, and act upon. This presentation traces the evolution of metering technology from its electromechanical origins through to the advanced metering infrastructure of today, using BC Hydro’s metering history as a living case study that mirrors and illuminates the broader industry arc. From early induction disk meters through BC Hydro’s AMI 1.0 deployment and smart metering program, the utility’s journey reflects the engineering decisions, standards challenges, and operational transformations that have shaped metering practice across North America.

BC Hydro currently operates a large and mature smart metering fleet based on a private wireless mesh network and cellular technology. While the current platform has provided strong foundational capabilities for billing and operations, several emerging challenges and opportunities exist including, aging hardware platform approaching lifecycle transition timelines (~20-year asset life), increasing complexity in enabling new capabilities, new meter failure patterns, limited ability to access and utilize advanced meter data and evolving grid requirements such as DER integration and electrification.

As BC Hydro’s metering asset ages, we are at the crossroads of making significant asset investment to refresh our ageing fleet of metering system assets. This generational investment in AMI2.0 promises to bring more flexibility, optionality and opportunities for addressing some existing and new grid edge use-cases.

Looking forward, the presentation postulates the defining characteristics of the next generation of metering, one in which the meter is no longer a passive endpoint but an active node of grid-edge intelligence.  BC Hydro’s AMI 1.0 foundation and AMI 2.0 asset refresh journey ahead provides a concrete launching point for examining what comes next: sub-second data granularity, operational flexibility and the convergence of measurement, communication, and computation at the grid edge.

Kunle Adeleye of BC Hydro

Topic:

Expert talk on Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Biography:

Kunle Adeleye is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University and a Master of Science degree from Purdue University in the United States. He currently serves as a Specialist Engineer in BC Hydro’s Integrated Planning department, where he is responsible for strategic planning, asset management, engineering of revenue metering solutions and sustainment of BC Hydro’s smart metering systems, which include more than two million deployed metering endpoints.

In previous roles at BC Hydro, Kunle played a key role in developing the utility’s Smart Grid strategy, helping modernize the distribution system and advancing the deployment of innovative grid technologies. He also represents BC Hydro on a number of utility-focused industry working groups and standards development organizations, including Electricity Canada, IEEE, IEC and ANSI. Kunle currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Electricity Canada’s Metering Policy Technology Committee, where he helps guide the development of metering best practices that support innovation while ensuring continued compliance with Measurement Canada standards.

Before joining BC Hydro, Kunle spent more than a decade at General Electric, where he worked on the design and development of distribution protection equipment electronics, industrial automation systems and power generator turbine control systems. His work led to the award of a United States patent related to series arc detection technology in electrical distribution protection equipment. An active member of the IEEE Standards Association, Kunle contributed to the development of the industry’s first IEEE 2030 Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability between energy technology and information technology systems. He also served on the technical planning committee for the 2014 IEEE PES General Meeting in Vancouver and was Co-Chair for the IEEE Power Africa 2017 Paper Review Technical Committee.

Beyond his professional work, Kunle has held numerous leadership and volunteer roles with several organizations such as the Engineers Without Borders, Toastmasters and Engineers Canada. He is also passionate about inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). He actively supports educational and mentorship initiatives through coaching the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Science Games, delivering BC Hydro electrical safety programming in schools, and mentoring youth through Junior Achievement and FIRST Robotics. He has also played an active role in recruiting and developing future engineering talent through industry-academic partnerships with UBC, SFU, BCIT, and UFV.

Based in Langley, British Columbia, Kunle is the proud husband and father of two daughters and an active member of his community. He volunteers with his local church and serves on the Board of the Derby Reach and Brae Island Parks Association, supporting environmental stewardship initiatives within Fraser Valley regional parks. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, whether hiking, cycling, golfing, skiing, or camping throughout British Columbia. An avid runner, Kunle has completed numerous half-marathons and full marathons, including races in Vancouver and Victoria, and most recently completed his first World Marathon Major at the London Marathon in England.
