Inspired by Gandhi’s Birthday: From Thoreau and Gandhi to Appropriate Technology — A Lifelong Practice of Listening, Choosing Peace, and Engineering for Humanity
Abstract:
Inspired by Gandhi’s birthday, this talk traces a path from Thoreau’s call to live deliberately, through Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence and appropriate technology, to our responsibilities as engineers, educators, students, and lifelong learners. Peace is a choice we make every day—including when we listen to the testimony and lived experiences of others and deliberately carry what we learn into our use cases, standards, technologies, and products. Drawing upon Jesuit traditions of education in service to others and IEEE SSIT (Society for the Social Implications of Technology) and principles of IEEE Standards DIITA (dignity, identity, inclusion, trust, and agency), we consider how education belongs not only to us, but to the communities we serve—and how we can choose, every day, to engineer for humanity.
