A Behaviour-Aware Framework for Fleet Electrification: Telematics Data to Support Evidence-Based EV Transition Decisions
The transition of commercial fleets towards electrification requires more than replacing vehicles based on distance travelled alone. Real-world fleet operation varies significantly according to route characteristics, driving behaviour and operational requirements, creating uncertainty around vehicle suitability and charging demand. This presentation introduces a behaviour-aware framework that combines high-resolution telematics analysis with practical fleet-level decision support. Using real- world driving data, vehicle operating behaviour is characterised through dynamic energy modelling and behavioural clustering. These insights are then transferred into a lower-resolution fleet environment, enabling operational routes to be classified and compared through alternative electrification scenarios. The framework is demonstrated using a real commercial fleet case study of refrigerated rigid vehicles, highlighting differences between route frequency, operational workload and reference battery-electric energy demand. The approach provides fleet managers with a transparent method for identifying suitable electrification pathways while recognising practical constraints such as infrastructure availability and operational resilience.
Biography:
Owen Mabbott is a Master’s student at the University of Bremen, Germany, having recently completed his MSc in Management Information Systems. Originally from the United Kingdom, he completed his undergraduate studies in IT Management for Business at the University of Greenwich, graduating with First Class Honours as part of an IT Higher Apprenticeship with Ford Motor Company. During his Master’s studies, Owen has been undertaking a research internship at the KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence through the Erasmus+ programme, focusing on data-driven approaches to sustainable transport and fleet electrification. His Master’s research has explored the development of a behaviour-aware framework for fleet electrification using real-world telematics data, vehicle energy modelling and operational analysis. Owen will commence doctoral studies at Newcastle University, UK, in January 2027, with research interests centred on fleet transitions, charging infrastructure and the application of digital technologies to support sustainable mobility.
