After obtaining his PhD, Professor Tennakoon joined GEC T & D Projects Limited (now part of Alstom Grid), Stafford as a Senior Design Engineer contributing to the development of a new generation of HVDC and SVC Thyristor valves. In 1987 he joined Staffordshire University where he currently holds the Chair in Power Electronic systems.

From Electric Vehicles to Mini-Grids: Second-Life Batteries for Energy Storage Applications

The rapid growth of electric vehicles is expected to create a growing supply of batteries that have reached the end of their first automotive use. Yet many of these batteries may retain around 70–80% of their original storage capacity, creating opportunities for repurposing in stationary energy applications.

This webinar explores the potential of second-life EV batteries for renewable-energy mini-grids and decentralised energy systems. It will examine the journey from EV battery retirement to stationary storage, including battery degradation, state-of-health assessment, testing, safe repurposing and integration into solar PV-based energy systems.

The session will also consider the economic and circular-economy opportunities associated with extending battery life, alongside practical challenges including safety, standards, certification, transportation, warranties, local technical capability and eventual end-of-life management.

Participants will gain insight into how the expanding electric-mobility sector could connect with renewable-energy mini-grids and what will be required for second-life batteries to become a safe, reliable and potentially more affordable energy-storage option in African contexts.
