Tour of Birdsall Power Plant
Please join the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Power and Energy Society and the Pikes Peak Section of IEEE for a walking tour of Birdsall Power Plant. Birdsall is a 1950s gas-fired steam power plant that generated about 60 MegaWatts into the Colorado Springs Utilities power system. It holds three turbine-generator units that are no longer in operation… and this is a rare opportunity for us to see details that we could not see if the plant were running.
The plant building has an elevator from the ground floor to the turbine deck (which has steel grate for part of its floor.) Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required. Hard hats and safety glasses are available; we may bring our own if we have them.
We need to PRE-REGISTER to meet the security requirements at Colorado Springs Utilities. BRING IDENTIFICATION.
Show-up time is 5:30 PM MDT Thursday, October 15th, 2026 at Pedestrian Gate P1 in front of 215 Nichols Boulevard, 80907. Parking is available across the street but will be difficult if we arrive too early.
After the tour, we propose to go to the Public House at the Alexander for an informal dinner at our own expense.
You way have seen this view of the Plant from Nevada Avenue:
From the Grandview Overlook in Palmer Park, it looks like a three-funneled steamship in the middle of town!
