Robustness in Machine Learning: Explainability, Uncertainty, and Intervenability
Neural network–driven AI systems, including large-scale foundation models, suffer from critical vulnerabilities: they behave unpredictably under unseen conditions, confidently produce inaccurate outputs, and resist meaningful human oversight. Traditional robustness measures—simple invariance to noise and perturbations—are insufficient for real-world deployment. This talk presents a human-centric framework that decomposes robustness into three actionable pillars: explainability, uncertainty quantification, and intervenability. We argue that every prediction made by a neural network must be accompanied by contextual explanations, calibrated confidence estimates, and mechanisms for human intervention.
We introduce our explanatory paradigms framework, rooted in abductive reasoning, which enables networks to answer correlative, counterfactual, and contrastive questions through gradient-based traversal of representation spaces, without retraining. Building on this, our introspective learning approach lets networks reflect on their own decisions, yielding features that unify explainability with uncertainty quantification. We then present our experts-in-the-loop framework for intervenability, which engages diverse domain specialists at each stage of the AI deployment cycle, from data curation to evaluation, supported by research in active learning under distributional shift, patient-aware active learning, and cost-centered annotation strategies. Applications span autonomous vehicle perception, computational ophthalmology, and seismic interpretation.

Biography:
Prof. Ghassan AlRegib, Ph.D., is currently the John and Marilu McCarty Chair Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In the Omni Lab for Intelligent Visual Engineering and Science (OLIVES), he and his group work on robust and interpretable machine learning algorithms, uncertainty and trust, multi-modal learning, and human in the loop algorithms. The group has demonstrated their work on a wide range of applications such as autonomous systems, medical imaging, and subsurface imaging. The group is interested in advancing the fundamentals as well as the deployment of such systems in real-world scenarios. He has been issued several U.S. patents and invention disclosures. He is an IEEE Fellow. He received several best paper awards and recognitions; the latest is the College of Engineering Outstanding Teacher (Midcareer and Senior) Award in spring 02025. He is the 2026 Distinguished Lecturer in the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Professor AlRegib is active in the IEEE. He served on the editorial board of several transactions and served as the TPC Chair for ICIP 2020, ICIP 2024, and GlobalSIP 2014. He was area editor for the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.
