Ada Lovelace Day – From Mathematics to Computing: Paths, Challenges, and Possibilities for Women in Science
IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) – Centro-Norte Brazil Section presents a special event celebrating Ada Lovelace Day, featuring a technical talk by Helaine Furtado entitled “From Mathematics to Computing: Paths, Challenges, and Possibilities for Women in Science.” The event will take place online via Google Meet on October 8, 2026, at 7:00 PM (Brasília Time). The talk will highlight the speaker’s academic and professional journey from Mathematics to Computing, addressing experiences, challenges, and opportunities for women in science, engineering, and technology. Helaine Furtado is a mathematician graduated from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), in Santarém, Brazil, with a Master’s and Ph.D. in Computing from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Her academic work has focused on neural networks, data assimilation, mathematical modeling, and computational methods. She completed a postdoctoral internship in data assimilation at INPE between 2013 and 2014 and is currently a professor at the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), where she works in teaching and scientific research, with emphasis on statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, and applied computing. She has also served as Director of Graduate Studies at UFOPA, contributing to the planning and strengthening of graduate programs. The event aims to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day while providing an accessible and inspiring perspective on women's trajectories in science and technology and encouraging students, young professionals, researchers, and other participants to explore opportunities in Mathematics, Computing, Engineering, and related fields.
