100 Years of FET – Commemorative Talk on Technology Evolution : FET to AI in 100 Years

IEEE SSIT is happy to celebrate 100 Years of FET – Commemorative Talk on Technology Evolution : FET to AI in 100 Years
Abstract : Age of electronics and related technology is not even a minor fraction of a femtosecond when compared to the age of global eco system. It may be interesting to note that a device emerged during a communication experiment more than a century back and the number of inventions followed through decades in semiconductor device technology paved the way to all the latest advancements including AI (Artificial Intelligence) and many more. A major trigger in this chain of evolutions happened 100 years back through the concept of FET (Field Effect Transistor) which could further enhance the development of technology multifold. All those transformed to numerous applications resulting in vast changes in humanity as a society and its coexistence in the nature along with millions of other species.  Currently these progressions started to threaten even the human existence. Stages of this evolution and how that helped to develop various applications is discussed here.  The presentation will be focused on various stages of the invention and transformations of semiconductor devices including bipolar transistor, field effect transistor, Integrated Circuit and its progression to VLSI and further to the present day devices. Introduction of various new materials and dimensional miniaturization from micron to nano levels will be discussed.  It will be interesting to observe how these helped to shape the present day human activities in view of the world population growth.  The surge in the device applications in the last three to four decades is huge and unparallel to any transformation in the human history which immensely helped in developing many useful tools and techniques for the benefit of mankind especially in human life style, health care, entertainment, etc. The impact is emerging to illustrate changes in human thought process and seems to challenge certain fundamentals of the human behavioral pattern and even started to grasp control over humans. An attempt will be made to view all these from a distance and different perspective while remembering the birth of these technological marvels.
