The IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter will organize a technical visit to the Black Hills Energy Control Center to provide participants with a practical understanding of how modern electric power systems are monitored, operated, and coordinated in real time.

During the visit, Black Hills Energy personnel will introduce the functions of a utility control center, including system monitoring, generation and load balancing, transmission operations, reliability coordination, and responses to changing grid conditions. Participants will also learn how electricity is scheduled and traded through wholesale electricity markets and how market operations interact with physical power-system constraints.

The visit will give students and faculty an opportunity to connect power-system concepts learned in the classroom and research laboratory with real-world utility operations. The event will also provide insight into careers and professional responsibilities in power-system operation, energy management, and electricity markets.
