Microgrid for Data Centre: Architecture, Modelling, and Dynamic Performance Analysis
The increasing power demand, reliability requirements, and sustainability targets of modern data centres are driving the adoption of microgrid-based energy systems. This presentation presents a comprehensive data centre microgrid architecture integrating utility supply, renewable energy sources, battery energy storage systems (BESS), backup generators, and critical/non-critical loads. A detailed modelling framework is developed using both Root Mean Square (RMS) and Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) approaches to capture system behaviour across different time scales and operating conditions. RMS models are utilized for steady-state and electromechanical dynamic studies, while EMTP models provide detailed analysis of fast electromagnetic transients and converter-level interactions. The dynamic performance of the data centre microgrid is evaluated under various operational scenarios, including grid-connected operation, islanded operation, renewable intermittency, load variation, fault disturbances, and grid restoration events. The study provides valuable insights into the design, control, and secure operation of future sustainable data centre microgrids.
