This lecture explores innovative transceiver architectures for high-throughput (100+ Gbps), energy-efficient radio links at D-band and sub-THz frequencies. It introduces channel aggregation architectures that combine multiple baseband channels through parallel up- and down-conversion paths, enabling wide RF bandwidth while limiting bandwidth requirements at lower-frequency interfaces. Critical building blocks, packaging, and antenna integration will be discussed, supported by experimental results from fabricated prototypes. The lecture also covers efficient generation and calibration of multiple local oscillator signals, followed by high-gain antenna alternatives to phased arrays, including reconfigurable metasurfaces and transmit arrays. Throughout, the focus is on minimizing energy consumption from baseband interfaces to antenna systems. It concludes by comparing demonstrated link performance with the requirements of backhaul/fronthaul links and smart factory networks.

Biography:

José Luis González-Jiménez is a Fellow and Research Director at CEA-Leti and an Invited Lecturer at Grenoble-Alpes University's Phelma Engineering School. He received his Ph.D. in electronic engineering from UPC, Barcelona, in 1998 and his HDR from Grenoble University in 2013. His research focuses on mixed-signal/RF, millimeter-wave and sub-THz integrated circuits, silicon photonics, and signal and power integrity. He has authored two books and over 160 journal and conference papers and holds 23 patents. A Fulbright Fellow and IEEE Senior Member, he regularly serves as a reviewer and technical program committee member for major international journals and conferences.
