The AUST-IEEE Student Branch, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering (FOE), will organize IEEE Day 2026 and New Students Orientation on October 16, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at AUST Ashrafieh Campus.

The event aims to welcome new students, introduce IEEE and its opportunities for professional development, connect students with alumni, and encourage collaboration across engineering and computing disciplines.

The opening ceremony will feature a welcome by Ms. Cirine Radwan, Vice-Chair of the AUST-IEEE Student Branch, followed by remarks from Mr. Michel Owayjan, Assistant Dean and Student Branch Counselor, the Dean, and the University President.

Professor Imad H. Elhajj from the American University of Beirut will deliver the keynote, “AI: For or Against Privacy?”, exploring AI’s potential to preserve visual privacy or reveal private information, alongside applications in disaster risk management.

An alumni panel will discuss career pathways, practical skills, internships, and ways alumni can support current students. Department chairs will then lead orientations for Mechatronics Engineering, Computer and Communications Engineering, Computer Science, and Information and Communications Technology. Biomedical Engineering students will join the CCE orientation.

The program will conclude with refreshments, networking, group photographs, an IEEE photo session featuring student formations spelling “AUST” and “IEEE,” and board games and team activities. Appreciation trophies will recognize the keynote speaker and alumni panelists.

New students, returning students, faculty, university leadership, and administrative staff are invited to participate in this celebration of technology, professional responsibility, and the AUST community.

AI: For or Against Privacy?

AI For or Against Privacy?
We will try to answer the question by reviewing our work on the use of AI for preserving visual privacy and on the possible use of AI for reveling the private information. We will highlight how technology can have dual use, the good and the bad. We will also briefly present our recent work on the use of AI for disaster risk management.
