Title of Keynote: Reliable Value Creation: Finding Your Place in a World of Permacrisis

Speaker: Dr. Oleks Osiyevskyy | Professor of Entrepreneurship, Haskayne School of Business | Academic Director, Entrepreneurial Thinking, Office of Signature Learning Experiences | University of Calgary

Keynote Overview:

Societies move forward the way good engineering does: through experiments. Entrepreneurs test new ideas, most fail, and the ones that work are scaled up until they change how we live and work. Today that cycle matters more than ever. Geopolitical shocks, energy volatility and fast-moving technologies are the permanent operating condition, often called “permacrisis”. In this world, every organization depends on people who can act as entrepreneurial agents of change, whether they sit in a startup, a project team or a large established company.

But how do you do that reliably, and not by luck? This keynote offers a practical answer at three levels: the individual, the team and the organization. It starts with value creation as the core of entrepreneurial thinking. The BFMD framework (Benefit, Focus, Monetization, Delivery) is a simple tool for testing whether an idea, product or business actually creates value for customers and captures value for the organization. The talk then turns to the five leadership principles that keep value creation going under turbulence. It ends with the leadership competencies that turn those principles into everyday habits.

Attendees will leave with:

  • a diagnostic for checking any idea or business against four value creation mechanisms;
  • a way to see where they and their teams can drive change;
  • concrete first steps they can try the following Monday.

Biography:

Dr. Oleksiy Osiyevskyy is Professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. He is driven by one idea: entrepreneurship should not be a lucky accident. It should be a deliberate, reliable and repeatable source of growth for startups, established companies and whole nations.

Oleksiy has more than 100 publications in leading academic and practitioner outlets. He is internationally recognized for his research on business model innovation, organizational resilience and how entrepreneurs develop. He is a co-author of the recently published “Value Creation Management: An Integrative Perspective and Readings” (De Gruyter, 2026). The book sets out value creation as a management discipline. Its practitioner companion, “What Holds: a roadmap for organizations to keep winning in permacrisis”, is in preparation.

Beyond the classroom, Oleksiy works with boards, executives and leadership teams across sectors, helping them turn strategic insight into growth plans they can actually execute. Students in his MBA and entrepreneurship courses know him for bringing the same energy and rigour to the classroom that he brings to his research and his work with companies.
