Functional Biomechanics: How Technology Advancements Can Prevent Injuries and Improve Performance
Functional Biomechanics: How Technology Advancements Can Prevent Injuries and Improve Performance

Abstract
Functional biomechanics is the examination of human movement patterns during dynamic tasks, such as for ergonomics, neuromuscular diagnosis, athletic training, injury risk reduction and healthy aging. Impact biomechanics research with cadaver, surrogate and computational models has led to the design of safer vehicles. Similar techniques were applied to better understand lower extremity injury mechanisms in sports and evaluate solutions for injury prevention. Orthopedic surgery and implant improvements help patients recover from acute injuries and chronic degeneration. Recent industrial revolutions have blurred the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds and technology has moved from large/stationary systems to light wearable (or implanted) devices that allow for new ways of interacting with information. Advancements in wearable sensors, computer vision and musculoskeletal modeling are allowing greater consumer accessibility to proactively prevent musculoskeletal injuries or track wellness and optimize performance.
