Topic:

Additive Manufacturing: Emerging Oppo

Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, offers fast prototyping, geometric flexibility, easily customizable products, and in some cases low cost. Using AM for microwave devices, however, is not straightforward: the technology was not specifically developed for microwave components, and some adaptation and post-processing is usually necessary. Moreover, many different AM technologies exist, and understanding their characteristics is essential before selecting one. This presentation provides an overview of the available AM technologies and analyzes in detail those most commonly used for manufacturing microwave components, illustrated through several examples. Microwave components fabricated with the most popular AM processes will be shown, along with the manufacturing steps, post-processing, and all actions needed to make each component perform well. The talk will also show how the flexibility of AM enables new classes of components with non-conventional geometries, exploited to achieve high performance in terms of compactness, weight, and losses.

Biography:

Cristiano Tomassoni received his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from the University of Perugia, Italy, in 1999. He was a Visiting Scientist at the Technical University of Munich and a Guest Professor at Otto von Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany, contributing to the enhancement of several analytical and numerical methods for electromagnetic simulation. Since 2001 he has been with the University of Perugia, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His research interests include waveguide components and antennas, miniaturized, reconfigurable, dielectric, and substrate integrated waveguide filters, and the use of Additive Manufacturing technologies such as SLA, LCM, SLM, FDM, and PolyJet for microwave components. Prof. Tomassoni is an IEEE Fellow (Class of 2025), Chair of the IEEE MTT-S MTT-5 Filters Technical Committee, and an IEEE MTT-S Distinguished Microwave Lecturer. He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques from 2018 to 2022 and received the 2012 Microwave Prize of the IEEE MTT-S.
