The New Shape of AI Accountability in Light of the EU AI Act Digital Omnibus
The new shape of high-risk AI accountability in Europe is set upstream, in how a handful of providers design and develop AI. Harmonised standards are meant to homogenise the ethical and technical orientation of high-risk AI so that it delivers a high level of protection for health, safety and fundamental rights. But the Digital Omnibus amendments to the EU AI Act show that the ability to hold those providers to account has moved away from the last mile: deployers, national regulators and, above all, the people affected. In a world where technology crosses borders, concentrating accountability and enforcement in a central AI Office looks logical. But can it deliver trustworthy and accountable AI?
