Abstract:

Recent advances in moiré superlattices and twistronics have opened new avenues for discovering emergent quantum phenomena. Numerous breakthroughs have been made in exploring new topological and strongly correlated phases, as well as the emergence of novel magnetic orders in twisted 2D materials. In particular, twisted 2D magnets provide a promising platform for exploring novel spin textures through moiré engineering, where twisting van der Waals magnets introduces spatially modulated interlayer magnetic interactions. Among various 2D magnets, chromium triiodide (CrI3) exhibits unique stacking-dependent interlayer magnetism, where monoclinic stacking favors antiferromagnetic coupling, while rhombohedral stacking gives rise to ferromagnetic coupling. This opens up new opportunities to control and engineer competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions at the nanoscale, resulting in noncollinear states and even topologically nontrivial spin textures. By combining magneto-optical measurements, scanning NV magnetometry, and 2D exciton sensing, we reveal the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic coupling, moiré-induced magnetic domains, and moiré skyrmionic phases. These highlight magnetic moiré superlattices as an exciting platform to investigate the emergent moiré magnetic phases.
